Project Overview
Community Children's Center is a family resource center that provides accessible childcare, a clothing closet, food pantry, parenting classes, and aid resources for families in Douglas County. After completing a capital campaign to fund the renovation and expansion of their Family Resource Center, they needed the newly built space to feel intentional, welcoming, and fully realized from the moment it opened. The project encompassed a large-scale donor recognition wall with interactive components, interior signage designating staff-only areas, restrooms, and nursing rooms, exterior wayfinding signage and campus maps, and a suite of print materials including the capital campaign booklet, event signage and materials, and invitations for various events throughout the campaign.
My Contributions
The donor wall required building a concept from scratch that fit both the space and the audience. Drawing from the renovation renderings, planned wallpaper, and nature-forward interior direction, we developed a large tree installation spanning three walls with dimensional leaf graphics bearing donor names in tiered sizes. The interactive component went through several explorations before landing on a magnetic play wall with colorful shape magnets and illustrated flower outlines, designed so children could build flowers or create freely across the full surface. Every decision considered the heights, ages, and developmental stages of the children and families using the space. The project ran 13 months and required constant adaptation as the renovation budget and timeline shifted, client contacts turned over, and measurements had to be retaken at multiple stages to ensure everything fit precisely. We coordinated closely with the construction project manager and fabricator on materials, lighting, and installation. Spanish translations were prioritized amongst signage and materials as a deliberate accessibility choice for the families the center serves.
Results
The completed installation fit seamlessly with the building's design, color palette, and atmosphere. The donor wall became an immediate focal point at the ribbon cutting and has since served as a photo backdrop for events in the space. The interactive magnet wall has been well received by children and families, with story readings and gatherings now taking place on the carpet in front of it. The wayfinding signage and Spanish translations have made the building more navigable and accessible for all visitors, and the bathroom iconography has been specifically noted as helpful for young children finding their way independently. The project served as a successful capstone to the full capital campaign.
